The long-awaited FIDE Grand Prix in Baku was officially opened on Wednesday evening at the Cultural Event Center. The tournament's opening ceremony was attended by chess officials, sponsors, national and international chess media. From 2 nd till 14 of October over eleven rounds, the strongest players in the world will compete in the round robin tournament.

At the 84th Congress of the International Chess Federation FIDE, which took place in Tallinn, Estonia October 1st through 10th, 2013, a decision was made to create two cups for the Men’s and Women’s Grand Prix. FIDE’s President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov lent wholehearted support to this initiative. In accordance with this decision the Lobortas Classic Jewelry House has designed and created the models of future Big and Small trophies to award the FIDE Grand Prix series 2014-2015 winnner.
Annually precious trophies, crafted out of silver, gold and adorned with diamonds in the author's work of the Lobortas Classic Jewelry House will be solemnly awarded to the winner of men's Grand Prix six-stage series. Before the Lobortas Classic Jewelry House had created the Big and Small chess Oscars "Caissa" and FIDE women's Grand Prix series trophies.
The founder of Lobortas Classic Jewelry House Igor Lobortas will present the models at the opening of the first stage of the men’s Grand Prix series, which will be held from 1 to 15 October in Baku. Besides, Big Grand Prix trophy with the engraved name of Hou Yifan, the winner of women’s FIDE Grand Prix series 2013-2014, will be transferred to FIDE. One month earlier Women’s World Champion Hou Yifan was awarded with the Small Cup for her victory in Women’s Grand Prix series 2013-2014.

The first stage of FIDE GP series 2014-2015 in Baku |
In a few days FIDE starts the third Grand Prix series 2014-2015 with the first stage to be held in Baku (Azerbaijan) from the 1st until the 15th of October 2014. Back in 2008 it was also the capital of Azerbaijan which hosted the first ever Grand Prix stage and a great deal has changed since then as FIDE has organized 30 Grand Prix tournaments. One only needs to remember that the event six years ago was own by future World Champion Magnus Carlsen, Chinese top player Wang Yue and Vugar Gashimov, one of the leading chess players of Azerbaijan, who tragically passed away in January 2014.
